We drove up from Glasgow and stayed at the Hotel Melvich in Thurso (you can see my review on this). It was about 32 miles away and took 50 minutes. From Perth it is about 250 miles and will take a little under 5 hours to drive. The castle website has details on how to get there including, I think, public transport.
Hello - could you let me know whether dogs are allowed (on a lead) in the gardens? I am visiting Scotland in June, and it was my uncle's family (Imbert Terry) who I believe sold the property to the Queen Mother, so I would be very interested in coming.

Their website indicates dogs are allowed on a lead in the grounds, but not allowed in the animal centre or walled garden. Of course they request you pick up after them. The ticket office can also direct you to a shaded parking area in the wood if you want to leave your dogs in the car while you tour the castle.
I have some difficulties with steps and long walks. Is this a problem?

I would take the tour of the castle which does involve mounting and descending stairs. Then you would know how much energy you have let for strolling around the gardens.
