The Office of State Fire Marshal was unable to identify the Nov. 17 fire's cause “due to the extent of damage the building has sustained," officials say.

POLAND (WGME) - A building on the campus of a former controversial Maine school for troubled kids was destroyed in a fire over the weekend. Officials say the fire happened at 11 Number 5 Road in Poland around 5 a.m. on Sunday. It was the site of Élan School, a controversial private school for troubled kids.

The Elan School was a boarding school for troubled youths that closed in 2011, citing financial problems and lack of enrollment.

Former Elan resident Mark Babitz obtained Williams’ incomplete death certificate and names of witnesses to the fight. Williams’ sister Pam Newell was 12 years old and in foster care at the time and was told her brother died of a brain aneurysm. Babitz and Newell presented the information to Maine State Police who opened an investigation.
