Two mighty beams of energy have been detected shooting in opposite directions from a supermassive black hole inside a distant galaxy - the largest such jets ever spotted, extending about 140 times the diameter of our vast Milky Way galaxy.

Astronomers have used the NASA/ESA James Webb Space Telescope to confirm that supermassive black holes can starve their host galaxies of the fuel they need to form new stars. The results are reported in the journal Nature Astronomy.

A Milky Way-sized galaxy from the early universe appears to have stopped producing any new stars because a supermassive black hole at its center is blasting out all the material needed for stars to be forged,

The GS-10578 galaxy, known as Pablo’s Galaxy, formed about two billion years after the Big Bang but is essentially dead due to its inability to form new stars. The astronomers observed the black hole pushing out huge amounts of gas from the galaxy at a greater rate than what it needs to form new stars

Astronomers have spotted the biggest pair of black hole jets ever seen, spanning 23 million light-years in total length. That's equivalent to lining up 140 Milky Way galaxies back to back.
