A Democratic leader said they ‘had to deny quorum’ so Republicans understand they can’t even convene the house ‘without bipartisan collaboration’

Following the contentious first day of the 2025 Minnesota Legislative session, where members of the DFL failed to show, partisan tensions are rising as lawmakers claim House Republicans attempted to select a speaker.

Minnesota legislative battle shifted to the courts Wednesday. Minnesota House Democrats and Secretary of State Steve Simon filed petitions with the state Supreme Court challenging Republicans’ move to convene and elect a speaker on the first day of session Tuesday when no DFLers were present.
