STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden has sent a formal request to China seeking cooperation to help clarify what happened when two undersea cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on Thursday.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on Thursday during a conference in Harpsund, Sweden, that we have sent an official request to China for cooperation in clarifying the issue of the severed telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea.

Sweden's prime minister says his government has formally asked China to cooperate in explaining the recent rupture of data cables on the Baltic Sea bed in an area where a China-flagged vessel was sighted.

Sweden has demanded that the Chinese vessel connected to an investigation of two Internet cables in the Baltic Sea being damaged earlier this month return to its waters as part of the probe.
