China's Ding Liren beat teenager Gukesh Dommaraju of India in the opening round of the world chess championship in a major confidence boost for the title holder on Monday.

The head-to-head doesn't favour young Gukesh (as you'd expect considering his age) with Ding having won twice and drawn once in three classical matches, but as the FIDE Candidates and the Chess Olympiad showed rather emphatically, Gukesh is a player who improves with every passing day.

At one point, the Indian needed to make 7 moves in 45 seconds to avoid losing on time. He just about managed it with one second on the clock. But he resigned two moves later.
