French President Emmanuel Macron names centrist ally François Bayrou prime minister after last week's historic parliamentary vote that ousted the previous government.

The new prime minister, a Macron ally, must try to assemble a government, regain control of France’s deficit and satisfy warring political factions.

The appointment comes after Michel Barnier’s government was toppled last week in a battle over public finances.
