Michigan State Police are investigating the incident and will determine if the man was holding a working firearm.

Chief Winstrom said it doesn't appear that the man was intending to hurt anyone, but instead had been intending to end his own life with "suicide by cop."

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man with a gun was shot and killed by officers outside of Trinity Health in Grand Rapids Friday night. Around 10:45 p.m., dispatch received several 911 calls about a person with a gun near Trinity Health in the area of Maple Street SE and Jefferson Avenue SE.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids Hospital, Grand Rapids police said. Officers arrived at the intersection of Maple Street SE and Jefferson Avenue SE near the hospital’s front parking lot and commanded the man multiple times to drop the weapon.
