Talk about taking the road less traveled. Ryggs Johnston honed his golf game in the tiny Montana town of Libby in the northwest corner of the state.

Ryggs Johnston, who recently graduated from Arizona State, earned the biggest win of his young career in Australia.

Ryggs Johnston, a 24-year-old professional golfer and 2019 graduate of Libby High School, won the 107th Australian Open golf tournament last weekend with a score of 269. That finish of 18 strokes under par gave him a three-stroke margin of victory to edge out Australian golfer Curtis Luck.

Unheralded American Ryggs Johnston has won his first professional title by claiming the Australian Open by three stokes, while South Korea’s Jiyai Shin claimed her second Women’s Australian Open which was played concurrently at two courses on the famed Melbourne sand belt.

Ryggs Johnston arrived in Australia ranked 954th in the world five months into his professional career having never set foot on Kingston Heath, not even for a practice round.
