It was not long ago that the NFL world was praising the San Francisco 49ers. After demoting Nick Sorensen from his defensive coordinator role and firing special teams coordinator Brian Schneider, a sigh of relief occurred.

That decision came after Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen pulled himself out of contention for their vacant head coach position. Coen had been considered the favorite and his withdrawal followed reports that now Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson did not like the setup in Jacksonville.

The 49ers announced on Thursday they have completed an interview with Detroit Lions passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend for their vacant defensive coordinator spot. Townsend interviewed virtually for the opening.
