Four years after coaching his first game on any level at Tennessee State, George was mentioned in the same breath with a legendary NFL coach (Tomlin) and considered for a position as head coach of one of the NFL's most iconic franchises.

From the moment the Bears fired coach Matt Eberflus, they were committed to conducting a wide-ranging and deliberate search for a new coach.

The Bears interviewed former NFL running back and current Tennessee State University coach Eddie George in person on Sunday, the team announced. The team is familiar with George, a Heisman Trophy winner and Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee, as he spent time with Chicago during the 2023 offseason as a Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching fellow in OTAs.

The former NFL running back who was a training camp assistant in 2023 for the Bears will have an interview for the vacant Bears head coaching position according to a Fox Sports report.

After a 5-12, last-place season that included 10 consecutive losses and the in-season firings of coach Matt Eberflus and offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, the Chicago Bears embarked on a wide-ranging search to hire the franchise’s next head coach.

For some of those teams, that will involve finding new head coaches and/or General Managers. Three teams fired their head coaches during the season and two more have been dispatched as of 9 a.m. ET on January 6.
