A member of Kyle Shanahan's staff at the San Francisco 49ers, declined an interview to become the head coach of the New York Jets for the 2025 NFL season.

New York announced Thursday afternoon that the team interviewed Slowik for their open head coach role. The former 49ers assistant has been the Houston Texans offensive coordinator for the last two years while helping C.J. Stroud become one of the best young quarterbacks in the game.

The San Francisco 49ers have many options in front of them, and trading HC Kyle Shanahan is a possible way for the team to move forward.

The 49ers are hoping to keep Sorensen around on Kyle Shanahan's staff in a lesser role, just not as the defensive play-caller. Sorensen has spent the last three years in the organization, holding titles of defensive assistant, defensive passing game coordinator and nickelback coach before being named defensive coordinator prior to last season.

The jump from position coach to head coach is unusual but not unprecedented. A great example of it working is Andy Reid, who went from Packers quarterbacks coach to Eagles head coach in 1999. Reid has won 273 regular season games, the fourth most in NFL history, and has won three Super Bowls with the Chiefs.
