Shupe was ahead of Smith by 11 votes in the Republican Primary for the southern Delaware seat, covering Milford, Lincoln, Ellendale, Cedar Neck, Broadkill Beach, Slaughter Beach, and parts of Milton. Shupe was first elected to the House seat in 2018 after serving as a Milford councilmember and the city’s mayor.
It is the first time in recent memory that a House Speaker was defeated in a primary in Delaware. Smith is unopposed in November's general election. Smith defeated Longhurst by 180 votes on the Sep. 10 primary. Longhurst held the office and represented District 15, in Bear, for almost 20 years. Her term ends on Nov. 5.
