Salt Lake City leaders approved agreements with the Larry H. Miller Company and state officials, finalizing a new Fairpark district that could house an Major League Baseball team someday.

The Salt Lake City Council Tuesday unanimously approved rezoning nearly 100 acres of land on the west side owned by the Larry H. Miller Company. Why it matters: Supporters of the project say the mixed-use development will "revitalize" the west side and open the possibility for the state to welcome a Major League Baseball team.

Although there is not yet a team, Salt Lake City is one step closer to welcoming Major League Baseball to town. The city council voted unanimously Tuesday night to rezone a portion of the west side, located north of the Utah State Fairpark in an area called the "Power District.

Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City planners officially narrowed down three long-term conceptual plans for Smith's Ballpark with three different outcomes for its future: One plan would preserve the 30-year-old ballpark for future community sports — beyond just baseball — and entertainment options while adding more businesses to the area.
