Rebirth’ claimed four gongs–and the incredible indie hit ‘Balatro’ picked up two–but the public favored ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ for GOTY.

Black Myth: Wukong, the debut game from Chinese developer Game Science, has swept past the likes of Astro Bot, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Helldivers 2 to claim the title of Ultimate Game of the Year at the U.K.’s Golden Joystick Awards.

Wukong is easily one of the biggest games of 2024, but its mixed critical consensus makes it a strange GOTY nominee.

The Golden Joystick Awards took place on November 21, 2024, kicking off this year’s season for video game awards – and Black Myth: Wukong grabbed the first big trophy of 2024, winning the Ultimate Game of the Year.

The Golden Joystick 2024 winners have been revealed, with Black Myth Wukong and Astro Bot developers Team Asobi winning big.

Astro Bot, Black Myth: Wukong, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are among the games nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. The Silent Hill 2 remake has been left out of the nominations list for Game of the Year but is in the race for other categories.

The votes have been cast and counted, and the winner declared: Black Myth: Wukong is the winner of Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards 2024.

Wukong from Chinese developer Game Science came out of nowhere to become one of the year's best-selling games. Considering it's a single-player outing, a new IP, and Game Science's first console title,

Wukong turned out to be one of the surprise hits of the year, and the action-adventure game is currently racking up awards. During an acceptance speech for one of those trophies, the cofounder of the studio behind the game said fans can expect a new surprise next month.

Wukong has teased “some surprises” for later this year. Accepting the Game of the Year award via video message at the Golden Joysticks, Game Science co-founder Feng Ji encouraged people who have yet to buy the smash hit action game to now do so.
