Suffolk County is deactivating its red light cameras, ending a controversial program that ticketed drivers for the last 14 years.

All red light cameras in Suffolk County are being deactivated and taken down as of Dec. 1 after the Suffolk County Legislature chose not to renew the contract for the cameras, which has been in place since 2009.

Drivers with red-light camera tickets issued in Nassau no longer will have to pay a $45 public safety fee and $55 driver responsibility fee, a county spokesman confirmed.

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said automated cameras, including the red-light cameras seen across the city in previous years, could be making a comeback. This, he said, is an effort to curtail pedestrian crashes and fatalities.

Suffolk County is putting the brakes on its red-light camera program after 14 years. It will be out of commission on Dec. 1. "I get too many tickets. Turning on red when it doesn't say no turn on red," says Ben Leibstein, of Babylon.

The 216 red-light camera systems at 100 intersections in Suffolk issued an average of 980 tickets — at $50 apiece — per day in 2023, according to county data.

Red light cameras could return to Rochester, according to Mayor Malik Evans, citing concerns over pedestrian safety.
