On Wednesday, the Fed became the latest major central bank to reduce borrowing costs, cutting its main interest by half of a percentage point to roughly 4.8% from a two-decade high of 5.3%, where it had stood for 14 months. It also signaled that there will be more cuts to come in the next few months.

The U.K. central bank left its key interest rate unchanged, taking a more cautious approach than the Federal Reserve.

The Bank of England kept interest rates at 5.0% on Thursday, saying it would be careful about future cuts, and also held off from running down its bond holdings at a faster pace, avoiding extra budget strains for finance minister Rachel Reeves.

The Fed meets eight times a year to assess the health of the US economy and vote on the federal funds rate, the rate banks use to lend and borrow money. While the Fed’s decision to change rates doesn’t directly affect savings rates, changes in APYs typically follow. The changes can take several weeks or even months to take effect.
