Notre Dame did force Ohio State into a third-and-long on the ensuing possession, but a 56-yard pass from Will Howard to freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith all but sealed the win for the Buckeyes. A 33-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds remaining gave Ohio State a 34-23 lead.
