Elon Musk’s X is intervening in the bankruptcy sale of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ Infowars, in what is believed to be the first time a social media platform has stepped in to a legal dispute over account ownership.

After fantasizing about buying MSNBC and installing Alex Jones on the liberal media network, Elon Musk inserted himself into a legal battle to try to block The Onion from obtaining any X accounts belonging to the bankrupt conspiracy theorist.

The Alex Jones bankruptcy trial has cascaded far beyond just the Infowars conspiracy theorist’s finances. X owner Elon Musk’s legal team has managed to get involved, setting off what could become a landmark battle over the fate of digital assets and who truly owns a social media account.

A federal judge in Texas has ordered a new hearing on whether the satirical news outlet The Onion made a valid bid for the Infowars platforms of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who alleges a bankruptcy auction was marred by fraud and collusion.

The Onion will have to wait a few more weeks to see whether a court will approve the satirical outlet’s bid to buy the carcass of Infowars, the site founded by right-wing conspiracy monger Alex Jones.

The Infowars accounts had been given a lifetime ban on X in 2018 prior to Musk buying the company in 2022, only for X to reinstall a number of accounts under what he claims is his free speech absolutism. Musk said he disagreed with much of what Jones’ claimed over the years, but that wasn’t the issue.

A U.S. bankruptcy judge in Houston was expected to hear a challenge by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on the requirement to sell media platform Infowars to the satirical media outlet The Onion.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones accused The Onion and Sandy Hook Elementary School families of "collusive bidding" and asked a bankruptcy court judge to halt the sale of his Infowars platform. Jones, who defamed the Sandy Hook families by calling the 2012 massacre a hoax and the parents of the 20 first graders actors,

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez on Monday said the hearing on the emergency motion to disqualify The Onion’s bid will take place on either Dec. 9 or Dec. 17. The latter is the same day that Lopez will hear arguments on the trustee’s request to approve the sale of Infowars to the outlet.

The self-proclaimed free speech advocate and billionaire owner of X makes a very public move to remind users they don’t own their social media accounts on the platform.
