A viral video captured an argument on the Kolkata Metro over language, with a Hindi-speaking woman mocking Bengali passengers for not speaking Hindi.

A video capturing a verbal dispute on a Kolkata Metro train has gone viral. The dispute arose when a non-Bengali speaking woman demanded fellow passengers speak in Hindi, asserting that everyone in India should know the language.

A viral video on social media shows a woman arguing with some Kolkata Metro travellers over the latter's conversation in Bengali. West Bengal is a part of India, and people must be learning Hindi, she says.

In Maharashtra, people speak Marathi. In Bengal, it’s Bengali. In Tamil Nadu, it’s Tamil. Karnataka has Kannada. Every region has its own language, and it’s these languages that make India so beautifully diverse. She goes as far as to call the Bengali woman ‘Bangladeshi’ for speaking in Bangla. Have a look:

"You are not in Bangladesh, you are in India. West Bengal is a part of India, you must be learning Hindi. You can speak in Bengali but not in Hindi despite living in India?" a non-Bengali woman said to a fellow metro passenger in Kolkata.

The altercation escalated when a Bengali woman, along with another individual nearby, challenged the Hindi-speaking woman, resulting in a heated exchange.
