LONDON (AP) — Britain remained Monday on high alert after the second major storm of the season battered the country over the weekend, leaving at least two people dead and disrupting road and rail travel.

Torrential rain doused most of the country, stymying travel and leading to flooding, landslides, fallen trees and power outages.

More flooding is “likely” this week after Storm Bert brought torrential rain over the weekend, the Environment Secretary said. Steve Reed said its impacts “should be less severe” than they were on Sunday and Monday morning.

More than half of drivers claimed they were not worried about flooding in the week before Storm Bert hit the UK.

Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts remain in place after torrential rain and high winds from Storm Bert caused major disruption to homes, roads and rail networks. At least three people died in the storm that struck much of the UK over the weekend and prompted criticism about a lack of preparation and insufficient warning for the severe weather.

The UK has been battered by Storm Bert and more flooding is likely over the next few days, according to the environment secretary. Steve Reed chaired a meeting with the Environment Agency today to discuss plans to protect communities from further flood damage.

The Met Office has said it is "committed to learning the lessons from Storm Bert" after criticism of its weather forecasts - with more heavy rain forecast to hit the UK this week.
