Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami secured a spot in the 2025 Club World Cup after winning the MLS Supporters' Shield, but their invitation to the tournament is now under scrutiny following a formal complaint filed with FIFA.

Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas said on Friday that he expects captain Lionel Messi to stay at the club through 2026 and that he sought the Argentine’s input regarding the search for a new head coach.

Inter Miami clinching the most points in the 2024 MLS season allowed them to take the host spot for the FIFA Club World Cup. Nonetheless, it’s a merit that wasn’t earned considering that the league has a playoff format to determine their champion.

FIFA has granted Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, a spot to participate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States after winning the MLS Supporters' Shield. The tournament will feature 32 top clubs from around the world and will take place from June 15 to July 13.
