James Gunn's "Superman" soared to the top of the box office this weekend, notching a win for Warner Bros. and DC Studios, which see the film as a way to revive the entire DC universe.

The domestic start is right in the middle of a wide projection range from industry analysts, rival studios and independent trackers, which had starts ranging from $115-135 million. It is also between the $118 million opening of director James Gunn's last film,

“Superman,” the newly rebooted comic book adventure starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, flew to $122 million in its first weekend of release. Those are strong ticket sales, enough to rank as the year’s third-largest debut after “A Minecraft Movie” ($162 million) and “Lilo & Stitch” ($146 million).
