The queen is recognized by her pheromones. Formic acid flash completely masks any and all pheromones for a period. That is until the vapor pressure diminishes.

Sep 18, 2017 · It seems that even though recipes for DIY formic acid pads have been around for quite a while, very little is discussed here. Here's one recipe: A 2-1/2 gallon pail with 250 "Dri-Loc 50" meat pads in it is filled with 8 liters of 65% formic acid and let sit overnight for soaking. (This gives 38 ml of FA per one mead pad.)

Jul 10, 2022 · Formic acid is all I use since it kills almost all mites in the hive. I wait until the temperatures are in the correct range and have no problems. It amazes me that people use OA when it doesn't reduce mite loads in the summer but just maintains the mite population.

I used his materials and procedures for years prior to Quickstrips. There is a ton of misinformation about formic use out there. Placing the acid at the bottom of the hive ignores all the science of formic vaporization.

May 13, 2020 · Formic acid is a hazardous material, getting it shipped to a home address will be a pain, and it's NASTY to handle, you must have a fume hood. Much safer and easier to use the commercial ones. If you are treating more than a few hives, you really need an organic vapor removal respirator.

Sep 6, 2023 · Here in Canada we use a lot formic acid to treat our hives. Seems to me that in the US it is less common and you don't hear a lot of beekeepers talking about it online. I believe that is one of the reasons we have less info and people testing it. Here in Quebec we use it on a screened bottom board and it evaporates in 6 hours.

Dec 27, 2007 · Formic Acid Formic acid can work. What happens depends on how fast it vaporizes. If it gets hot and vaporizes too quickly, bad things happen. If it vaporizes too slowly, efficacy is poor. Bill Ruzicka has some real detailed instructions on how to establish the evaporation rate. It's a major pain.
