The NATO headquarters is the political and administrative center of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). After previous locations in London and Paris, it has been headquartered in Brussels since 1967, in a complex in Haren, part of the City of Brussels, along the Boulevard Léopold III / Leopold III-laan. [1]

Since NATO's creation in 1949, France has consistently upheld its membership, both in the political and military spheres. However, France has frequently criticized NATO's operational methods, particularly regarding the dominant role of the United States within NATO.

Three of NATO's members are nuclear weapons states: France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. NATO has 12 original founding member states. Three more members joined between 1952 and 1955, and a fourth joined in 1982. Since the end of the Cold War, NATO has added 16 more members from 1999 to 2024. [1]

Recognising the undesirability of duplicating the military staffs of NATO, the Council and its Agency will rely on the appropriate military authorities of NATO for information and advice on military matters.

France is holding the rotating command of NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) in the first half of 2022. In light of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine in 2022, France decided to further increase its contribution to reassurance for the Allies most exposed to Russia’s threatening actions .

Since 1953, the Supreme Headquarters have concluded Supplementary Agreements to implement and amplify the provisions of the Paris Protocol and its application of the NATO SOFA to NATO International Military Headquarters (‘IMHQ’).

The first “Conference of Members of Parliament from the NATO Countries” was held at NATO Headquarters in the Palais de Chaillot in Paris on 18-22 July 1955, bringing together 158 parliamentarians from 15 NATO nations.
